Meet the Conservancy: Tom Lane, Development Associate
The Conservancy is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the SS United States, with the goal of creating an inspiring future for this magnificent ship.
Today, we’re speaking with the Conservancy’s Development Associate, Tom Lane, who plays a major role in connecting us with new and existing donors — securing the crucial funds that will be needed to give America's Flagship a brilliant second act.

How did you get involved with the SS United States Conservancy?
I found out about the Conservancy as a student in Temple University’s Master of City & Regional Planning program, with a concentration in historic preservation. I grew up on Vinalhaven, ME — an island off mid-coast Maine — where I taught sailing and developed an interest in maritime history. Between my love of coastal heritage and interest in adaptive reuse within an urban context, the Conservancy was a perfect fit.
What is your role as the Conservancy's Development Associate?
I work with the Conservancy team on fundraising efforts, including engaging our individual donors, planning events, and crafting our annual appeals. As a member of the small, part-time team, I do a little bit of everything else as well!
In your work with the Conservancy thus far, what are you most proud of?
I am proud to help grow our donor base and engage supporters to secure the necessary funds to set the stage for the Big U’s next chapter!
What are you looking to accomplish with the Conservancy in the future?
I would like to continue to energize and expand our donor base to help realize our redevelopment efforts and to create a permanent museum and collections paying homage to the rich, diverse, and inspiring stories and history of The Big U.
Help us secure a bright future for The Big U by making a generous donation.
